hen buying a new wedge, getting it fitted to your swing characteristics is as important as every other club in your bag. The new SM10 wedge line up from Titleist have 6 different grind options to suit every player and course condition. Let’s see which one works for you –
Firstly, we need to ascertain how you attack the ball with your wedges – are you steep and a digger? Or are you a shallow sweeper? Also, where do you play most of your golf– is it a course with firm turf conditions? Or soft, well watered fairways with soft sandy bunkers?
T Grind – built for the accomplished player who is ultra creative around the greens. A low bounce wedge that allows shot making from any condition. Perfect for the shallow sweeper
M Grind – For the player that likes to rotate the club faceopen and closed to manufacture shots around the green. Ideal for the shallow swing type.
F Grind – An all purpose grind that suits full shots and/orshots hit with a square face. Verypopular with the player who prefers a traditional wedge sole.
S Grind – Features a full sole but narrowed by a trailingedge grind. This grind works well inmedium to firm conditions – typical in many Queensland courses. With this sole, players can control theirloft with hands ahead or behind the ball.
D Grind – A versatile wedge with a trailing edge grind andhigh measured bounce – perfect for the player with a steep attack angle wholikes to manipulate the clubface position
K Grind – The wedge grind with the highest bounce – the ultimate bunker club and perfect for soft sand and turf conditions
One of the improvements in SM10 is the Centre of Gravity concept. The lower the CG, the more ball speed so this is perfect for wedges designed for full shots – 46 degree to 52degree. Wedges with 54-56 degrees of loft have a mid CG to optimize feel and ball flight control. For high lofted wedges in SM10, the CG position is higher and more forward due to the flange near the top line being thicker. With more mass at the top of the club, the CG move up. This promotes a lower ballflight to tighten dispersion and distance gapping.
SM10 has a proprietary heat treatment applied to the impactarea to double the durability of the grooves, without loosing feel onimpact. Typically, spin is optimal foraround 400 bunker shots before grooves begin to lose their sharpness, whichaffects spin. The SM10 heat treatmentdoubles this to 800 bunker shots.
Keeping this in mind, if you have played 75 rounds with yourwedges or done a lot of short game practice, chances are the grooves have losttheir sharpness and that shot that should stopped within 8 feet is now stoppingat 15 feet. This is the differencebetween getting up and down more often.
