What Exactly Is MOI, And Why Is It Significant In The Design Of Golf Clubs?

OI (Moment of Inertia) is themeasure of an object's resistance to change in its rotation. If you imagine themoment of impact between the face of a golf club and the ball, the clubface isrotating through impact and the last thing you need is twisting on impact.  This is particularlyimportant for golfers who may not consistently hit the ball in the centre ofthe clubface. Golf club designers have worked to increase the MOI in clubdesigns to enhance forgiveness and improve overall performance to suit a widerrange of skill levels.  High MOI clubdesign means greater stability, less dispersion on mishits, and improvedconsistency in ball flight.

Two drivers have just hit the market with thehighest levels of MOI ever designed!!! The Taylor Made Qi10 Max and the Ping G430 10K.  The 10 in the names of both refer to 10000MOI – a measurement of how much the face resists twist upon impact.  Breaking through this barrier with a driverhas been a constant challenge for equipment manufacturers – until now.  

The Taylor Made Qi10 Max driver features more weight as far back from the club face as possible. To do this, the Qi10 has a crown which is 97% carbon and a carbon face –which features “Twist Face” technology. With Twist Face technology, TaylorMade intentionally alters the curvature of the face to provide more corrective measures for off-centre hits. The face is twisted open (more loft) on the high toe and twisted closed (less loft) on the low heel. This is based on the idea that the majority of golfers tend to mis-hit shots towards the toe or heel.  By adjusting the face curvature in this manner, Twist Face aims to minimize the negative effects of hooks and slices, offering more forgiveness and better performance on these off-centre strikes. The goal is to help golfers achieve straighter shots when the ball doesn't make contact with the centre of the clubface.
